A Few Fun Christmas Ornaments

I have decided to start making a collection of Christmas Ornaments for 2013.
It will mostly feature various animals wearing cute little elf costumes. They are
all hand sewn with felt, and some have hand painted faces made with upcycled
khaki fabric. I am currently working on a Barn Owl elf, which will hopefully
make it's debut in my Etsy shop this week!  :)

Some pictures from the beach

We just got back from South Walton beach in Florida this past Wednesday. It was a beautiful and fun week full of beach walks, sea shell hunting, deep sea fishing and swimming! It's a little hard to come back to the dry heat of central Texas after that. But no matter where you are there is always beauty around you if you take the time to find it. Hope you enjoy the photos!

Colorful Watercolor Painting

I had a lot of fun making this painting last week. It is a mix of watercolors, opaque watercolors or gouache, and watercolor pencils. It is a little more abstract then what i usually do, so it was very refreshing.

A new painting :)

I love these little 3" x 3" canvases. They are a really fun size to work with, and can be found at any large craft store such as Michaels or hobbylobby . I painted this chubby Prairie Dog yesterday as a break from all the sewing I have been doing. It is nice to just relax and make something silly and cute once and awhile. I find that if I don't take breaks like this I get burnt out too easily when I am working on a longer project.

This little painting is for sale here on my Etsy shop

Panda Art Doll

Hello!

This little guy is my first attempt at making an art doll that has a polymer clay face and paws, with a soft plush body. It was a very enlightening experience and a lot of fun to make. The clay is painted with acrylic paint and the cotton body is decorated with fabric paint pens.

I just started a new part time job this week, but once I get used to my new schedule I will definitely be making more of these in the near future :)

I hope you enjoy him! There are a few more pictures of him on my Etsy shop, and he is for sale here:

Star and Mr. Moon, original art dolls designed by poofydove

I am super excited to announce that two of my soft sculptures are being featured in Stuffed Magazine this August 2013!!!

One of the things that shows up over and over again in my sketchbooks is the man in the moon. In general I enjoy drawing anthropomorphic creatures, but I have always had a special place in my imagination for Mr. Moon. So the eventual creation of the star and moon soft sculptures was only natural :)

They are a simple construction, made out of two identical pieces of fabric. Then the faces are hand sculpted using the needle and thread to give it a more 3-D feel. The details are hand painted using acrylic paint.

I think they are one of my sweetest designs so far. They have a simplicity that is reminiscent of childhood, play and a full imagination.

I hope you enjoy them!

One of these stars is for sale currently on my Etsy store, stop by and check him out :)

Embroidery Hoop Art

I love painting on embroidery hoops. They are a beautiful, informal and intimate way to display fine art in the home. These are some embroidery hoops that I have created using acrylic paint on fabric. Some are still for sale on my Etsy shop and some have sold.

Check out more of my artwork and embroidery hoops on my Etsy shop :)

Hello Mr. Fox!

I have made a wonderful discovery!
Last weekend I went to Joann fabrics to pick up a few things, and discovered
fabric paint pens! I love to draw and I love to sew....so I am super excited about
being able to bring the two together to make some new creations! For this foxy
pillow I used both hand embroidery and the paint pens to create the look of fur.
It's so much fun! :))

Woodblock Results

Hello!

A few weeks back I shared some photos of an in-progress woodblock that I was carving.
Here are some results from the finished block.

The first photos show the woodblock printed on fabric and the second set show the woodblock printed on paper as part of a mixed media piece.

New stuff in the works!

I love printmaking. It is such a unique way to make art!
I started on these doves today and took a few pictures to show you how they are created

I started by drawing my design directly on the block,
keeping in mind that when it is printed the image will be reversed

Then bit by bit I used my woodblock tools to cut away the areas that I want to stay white.
This part of the work takes a lot of concentration, because it's never fun to
accidentally cute where you don't mean to!

I will be sure to keep showing you my progress :o)

Homeward Handmade

Hilary, the artist behind Homeward Handmade on Etsy is one of my favorite people in the world. Both of us were studio art majors at Miami University in Oxford Ohio, and we got to know each other while attending some of the same art classes and sharing a studio space. We also collaborated on our B.F.A. gallery exhibition during my senior year.
I admire her as an artist for many reasons. She is passionate, driven, and has an incredible eye for beautiful things.
Her shop on Etsy is full of lovely creations inspired by nature including flower beards (my personal favorite), bridal head pieces and everyday items such as headbands and hair clips. She also has a super awesome blog full of interesting posts about life, food, and art.

Making a stuffed animal pattern after the fact

So...one of the major issues I have as an artist is that I don't plan well before I start making something.
My natural creative process is very intuitive which is both good and bad. But, it is especially bad when I want to reproduce something I have sewn before that does not have a pattern.

That is why I have started making sure to draw out a pattern before or while I am creating something. Because it is so much easier that way!

However, if you do have to re-make a plush animal and don't have a pattern there are a few things you can do to make it easier on yourself assuming that you have a picture to work with. This method will also allow you to enlarge or shrink your pattern while keeping the correct proportions. It works best with simple designs.

Step 1:
Find a picture that shows the front or back of your plush critter.
You can either print this picture or open it up in a computer program such as Paint.

Step 2:
Draw a box around your animal, matching it's height and width.
Measure the width of the box and divide it in half to draw the mid-line, and do the same with the height.
Already you can start to see how the negative spaces start forming angles with the sides of the box.

Step 3:
Draw straight lines along the large angles of the animal so that they extend past the box. A protractor can be used to actually get the degree of the angles if you want to be super accurate :)

(Here is a picture with the angles filled in, making them easier to see.)

Step 4:
This is not super necessary but I also like to draw a straight vertical line from the bottom corners of the animal up to the top of the box and from the top corners of the animal down, to show the relationship between the width of the head and bottom.

What you can do now is draw a box on a piece of freezer paper (keeping the height and width proportions the same), draw your mid-lines and use the angles you have discovered to make a much more accurate pattern for your animal.

This is actually the same basic method some art teachers use for beginning drawing, because it begins to teach how to measure angles and relationships within a composition. Hope this helps a little bit!

Wassupbrothers

If you haven't discovered her on Etsy yet, Olga from Wassupbrothers is an amazing Russian artist whom I dearly love and admire.

She uses recycled sweaters and vintage materials to make her stuffed animals which add beautiful colors, textures and patterns to the finished piece. Ever since I started selling on Etsy I have loved her whimsical handmade creations because you can tell they are made with lots of love and attention to detail.

Here are some of my favorite items from her gorgeous Etsy store!
